The Company is pleased to announce that the Qatalum Aluminium Smelter commenced its initial start-up operations on the 16th December 2009, two weeks ahead of the official milestone.
The initial start-up utilises 22 Pots out of the total 352 Pots in the finished refinery.
Dutco McConnell Dowell Middle East LLC (DMDME) is fabricating and installing all of the Main Bus Bar assemblies and the Pot Shells, then carrying out the lining of the pots before installing the Super Structures and completing the welding of the Anode Flexibles.
Qatalum, the first aluminium smelter in Qatar, is a joint venture between Norsk Hydro ASA and Qatar Petroleum. In its first phase, by mid 2010, the smelter will have an annual output capacity of 585,000 tonnes of high quality aluminium products and will be the largest single aluminium smelter ever built.
To date, DMDME has completed over 1,000,000 man-hours LTI free with a multi-national workforce of approx 700 and assisted Qatalum with schedule issues to fast track the completion of the project. DMDME is one of the world’s largest fabricators and installers of specialist aluminium smelting plant and equipment, and has a regional manufacturing facility based in Jebel Ali, Dubai.
