Komo Airfield, PNG, Contract Award

The Company is pleased to announce that MCJV, a joint venture between McConnell Dowell and Consolidated Contractors, has been awarded the contract to procure and construct the Komo Airfield in Papua New Guinea (PNG).

Komo, which is located approximately 10 km south east of the Hydes Gas Conditioning Plant (HGCP) and the future Juha developments, has been selected as the site for the project airport to support the PNG LNG project which will develop gas and liquid hydrocarbon resources located in the southern highlands of Papua New Guinea. The PNG LNG Project is sponsored by a joint venture consisting of Esso Highlands Limited, Oil Search Limited (OSL), Santos, Nippon Oil, Mineral Resource Development Company (MRDC) and Eda Oil.

The works, which are due to begin in December 2009, will include the construction of Komo Airfield to accommodate Dash 8 operations and limited Antonov AN 124 operations and the upgrade or construction of roads and bridges along two main logistics routes.

The MCJV will undertake construction of:

  • A new airfield at Komo;
  • Approximately 21 km of upgraded track between HGCP and the airfield (through Terejaga) to project design standard for heavy load transport;
  • Two new bridges designed to the project standard for heavy load transport on the HGCP - Komo Airfield Road;
  • Approximately 21 km of fibre optic cable to be installed from the Komo Airfield to HGCP;
  • Approximately 20 km of existing road between the Laijauko intersection (on the Idauwi - HGCP Road) and the new Komo Airfield (through Tagari) to be upgraded as required to support airfield construction.

The works are scheduled to begin in December 2009 for a duration of 24 months.
