The Company is pleased to advise that the Government of the Cook Islands and Ports Authority Board of Directors has awarded McConnell Dowell Constructors Ltd the Avatiu Port Development Project.
The project provides for expansion of the present port facilities to handle a larger and longer class of vessel, with the goal of increasing accessibility to the cruise ship market while also promoting local industry and development.
The scope of work includes:
- demolition of the existing wharf;
- construction of a new 260m long straight wharf face from a mixed wall of steel tubes and sheetpiles with a concrete capping beam and 40m wide structural pavement behind the wall;
- dredging of the main harbour and entrance down to -8m and widening the main harbour to provide a 130m radius turning basin for vessels; and
- shore protection works around the new dredge cuts and other minor repair works.
The project is due to commence in the new year with an 18 month contract duration.
