The Company is pleased to announce that the Ambuklao Power Station has reached the major milestone of Watering-Up ahead of schedule on 16th May, 2011.
The Ambuklao and Binga Dam Rehabilitation Project is a 225MW Hydro Power Project currently under construction across dual sites in the small villages of Ambuklao & Binga in Benguet province, Philippines.
McConnell Dowell was awarded the contract to rehabilitate these hydro projects in September 2008 and the construction journey has overcome a vast array of technical, physical, and programme challenges, while also enduring the onslaught of cyclones and landslides.
The MacDow site team, together with the project engineers (Norconsult) and client (SNAP), has worked tirelessly to bring the project to this milestone, and the early completion demonstrates the dedication of the entire team in working together to reach a common goal.
Key elements of the project have included:
- the excavation and construction of the massive concrete intake and outfall structures;
- 140m deep drop shaft;
- all headrace tunnels and pressure tunnels;
- rehabilitation of the dam walls; and
- construction of the 230kV switchyard.
Over 40,000m3 of concrete and several thousand tonnes of grout were batched in the construction of the project, and when complete nearly 5 million man-hours will have been worked.
Commissioning of the power station is now underway and commercial operations are scheduled to commence in early July.
Well done to all involved on this challenging and rewarding project.
