McConnell Dowell New Zealand
McConnell Dowell was founded in New Zealand in 1961 by entrepreneurial kiwis Malcolm McConnell and Jim Dowell. The company culture of McConnell Dowell, with its focus on overcoming challenges and achieving engineering excellence are characteristics that Jim and Malcolm brought to the business.
The courage to “take things on” is what led them to detonate Auckland’s aging Panmure Bridge from an old Harbour Board floating crane in 1964. From there, the next project they targeted was typically complex - a design and build offshore circulating water cooling system for Marsden Point Power Station. Their design solution was a world first in marine technology and made headlines in international engineering and construction publications.
McConnell Dowell has continued to create many ‘firsts’ and has firmly cemented itself as a leading, multi-disciplined contractor throughout NZ and the Pacific Islands. We deliver marine, civil, mechanical, maintenance, tunnelling, and pipelines services and our reputation for completing high-risk and technically difficult projects still stands 50 years on.
Our track record is underscored by the various engineering, safety, and environmental awards we have won. Our award winning team is backed by an extensive resource pool, which allows us to self perform work. We have a full plant fleet and Mechanical Division in South Auckland and our sister company, Electrix, provides specialist electrical services for our projects from its Auckland base adjacent to the our NZ Head Office.
The diversity of work we have completed includes an association with a wide range of clients in the transport, energy, resources, water and wastewater sectors. Our recent award of a $500m contract by Contact Energy to develop its 166 megawatt Te Mihi geothermal project in Taupo demonstrates the extent of our capability.
An example of ongoing and recently completed works includes:
- Rosedale Ocean Outfall
- Hobson Bay Tunnel
