This year McConnell Dowell has partnered with MUCSS, a student-led Civil and Structural Engineering society at The University of Melbourne. As a leading sponsor of the society, we have had the opportunity to attend several events coordinated by MUCSS, where we have connected with engineering students and provided insight into the industry and the career paths available to them.

MUCSS Infrastructure Engineering Networking Night

Every year, MUCSS hosts a flagship networking night aimed at connecting young, aspiring engineering students with industry professionals. We brought along several current graduate engineers to network with the students and provide insight into what to expect as a graduate at McConnell Dowell.

McConnell Dowell x MUCSS Exclusive Event

As part of the partnership, we have the opportunity to host an exclusive event for engineering students to attend. The Digital Engineering team delivered an engaging overview of DE and its growing importance in construction to a captivated audience of engineering students.

We just completed one of the most sustainable transport projects in Melbourne!

In Alliance with Level Crossing Removal Project (government), MTM (network operator), and Arup and Mott MacDonald (design partners), we removed the level crossing at Mt Derrimut Road and opened the new Deer Park Station in Melbourne's west - easing congestion, improving safety and caring for the environment while we did it.

Check out these impressive numbers from the project:

♻️ 125,000 pieces of recycled soft plastic used in construction materials.
♻️ 80% of construction waste processed with an industrial recycler for reuse.
♻️ Enough solar power generated to power the equivalent of 10 homes.
♻️ 44% of the project is covered by vegetation – including 2 rooftop gardens.

Our Purpose, Providing a Better Life, is about much more than the infrastructure we construct…

Take for example the win-win community partnership with the brilliant The Compass Institute in Queensland. A partnership that has already made our team better and opened both our hearts and minds at the Aura and Harmony Program.

So far, we have more than 153 Compass Hours clocked up and we are only a few weeks in.

The Compass Institute is a Sunshine Coast Social Enterprise dedicated to providing support for people with a disability. Compass uses an innovative further education model that allows people of all ages to make a smooth transition from school to an increasingly independent future. 🌞

This has been a super effort across our broader project team including our subcontractors and our customer Unitywater.

Our team on the Webb Street Level Crossing Removal Project in Melbourne has taken a proactive approach to address greenhouse gas emissions by incorporating 80% Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCM) in their concrete slab, the highest SCM content in Victoria!

Portland Cement is a binding agent used in concrete, and traditional cement production is a significant contributor to global carbon emission. Using SCM in place of cement further reduces the amount of carbon emissions.

Described as strong and, fit for purpose, the 80% SCM concrete mix can be used for non-structural applications like share user paths or footings. Amongst other locations the Webb Street project is using this mix in the slab that will be the waste enclosure.

We're leading the way with sustainability innovations - working with our suppliers, designers, and our construction teams to reduce carbon emissions!
