Health Care

Nationals from the UK, Ireland, Finland, Malta, New Zealand, Sweden, the Netherlands and Italy are covered by reciprocal health agreements, which may allow limited access to Australia’s national health scheme, Medicare.

Medicare covers the cost of treatment in public hospitals and provides subsidies for the costs associated with visiting a general practitioner and some specialists. Medicare does not provide dental or ambulance cover or cover the costs associated with some specialist treatments such as physiotherapy.

Medicare is funded through the Australian income tax system and an additional levy for people with incomes exceeding a nominated threshold who do not hold private health insurance.

It is recommended that you obtain private health insurance for yourself and your family prior to arriving in Australia as you will not be able to fully access Medicare until you become a permanent resident.
